Some businesses start with a business plan. Big Bag Maker started with a fabric market, a flash of colour, and the feeling that something this beautiful shouldn’t just sit on a shelf.

I’m Marcia. I make bags, pouches, cushion covers and accessories from vibrant African wax print fabrics — bold, unapologetically colourful, handmade one at a time in London.

It started long before the business did.

My twin sister and I learned to sew before we were ten years old, sitting with our mum in Birmingham. She taught us everything — how to cut fabric properly, how to thread a needle, how to unpick a seam without losing your mind. It was never framed as a skill. It was just something we did, together, as a family.

Decades later, those same hands are still at a sewing machine. The fabric has changed — now it’s the vibrant African wax prints that have always stopped me in my tracks — but the intention is exactly the same. Make something beautiful. Make it properly. Make it last.

It started with the fabric.

African wax print — Ankara — has always moved me. The geometric patterns, the saturated colour, the way a single piece of fabric can carry so much history and so much joy at the same time. I started buying it long before I knew what I was going to do with it. Then one day I sat down at my machine and made a bag. Then another. Then I couldn’t stop.

Every piece is made by hand.

No factory. No production line. Just me, my machine, and a carefully chosen piece of fabric that I genuinely love. I cut, sew and finish everything myself — which means every bag, pouch and cushion cover that leaves my studio is one of a kind. When a print is gone, it’s gone. There are no reruns.

Waste is not welcome here.

I work with remnant and end-of-line fabrics wherever I can — the offcuts and last rolls that would otherwise go unused. Small-batch production, thoughtful choices, nothing made speculatively. It’s not a marketing line; it’s just how it makes sense to work.

Made for real life.

I make things I’d want to carry myself. Bags with enough room to actually be useful. Closures that don’t require a degree to operate. Fabrics that wash well and wear beautifully. The prints are bold, but the making is practical — because stunning and functional are not opposites.
